Michael came to Coro, the next door neighbors of Interaction Associates at 149 Ninth Street, and oriented the Fellows in Public Affairs to the problem solving methods he and IA were investigating under a Carnegie Foundation Tools for Change grant. He was convinced that problem solving methods should be released from the cloisters of professional design and architecture schools and used by everyone--teachers, facilitators, and managers alike.

Michael threw a pre-party for a group of us going to the Coyote Masked ball, an infamous costume party that broke a lot of rules in the 70s. Here he is in a distorted photo vamping for the camera (can't figure out why Typepad won't load it properly). David Sibbet

Michael thought a lot about being a priest when he was younger, and seemed like that sometimes in his work. I drew this of him one evening at the New England River Basins Commission in New England in 1977. We worked together there for 18 months in a very idealistic attempt to get a wide crosssection of stakeholders agreeing on a new way to site power plants in the area. The public process, in their estimation, was broken. Many large change strategies emerged from this work that have persisted in both our practices. David Sibbet

He's a picture I drew during the Interaction Institute for Michael demonstrating how to introduce yourself as a chauffer. I'm not sure what the list of movies is--something to do with an exercise we all were doing. David Sibbet

Michael was very aware of the energetic aspects of facilitating, and the way in which his "dance" effected the group. I chose this as a masthead drawing because it feels like what Michael has done for our whole professional community this passing. It truly is a void, and it truly is drawing in participation! Michael was very aware of the ways in which facilitators could slip into disfunctional attachments to their work. He called it the "shadow side" and was as relentless about looking at his own as he was calling those of us in his facilitation training on ours. I did this drawing in 1980 going through the IA Facilitation training.
