I have discovered a wonderful 3DInteractive prototyping space in Second Life, an avatar-based world with 1,350,000 residents, 10,000 of which are on-line most any time. I have bought some land and create Sunseed Bardeen’s Story Studio and Riverside Studio there to showcase what can be done in this environment. My first installation shows work from The Grove and links out to various web pages. You can also enjoy the house I built, expressing my latent architectural leanings. I have also created a Story Studio for group chat and a Riverside Studio as an open gallery. A full case study of The Grove's strategic visioning work at National Semiconductor in the early 1990's is featured there now.
Second Life is the wild west digitally. There is everything in here. It’s not a gaming site, but a place where anybody can do anything, within the evolving rules of Linden Labs, the host.
All you need to do is sign into Second Life for a free demo, build an avatar and learn some basic maneuvering stuff. Once you have a name a password, you can go right to my place with the url below (called a slurl). It only took me about a hour to get so I could move around and visit places. Building and scripting is a whole other story. To get to my place, use this SLurl (or click on the "favorite website" reference in the right col of this blog).
The Grove has already been invited to participate in New Media Consortium’s huge seven island campus in Second Life. Larry Johnson, the CEO (aka Larry Pixel) says he would deploy some of his builders to help us create a real presence there, if we are interested. He’s working on getting in live graphics so that tablet work can appear directly. Attached is a snapshot of the site and of a NMC Forum I attended on Saturday with about three dozen digital artists. That’s me in the white pony tail and yellow shirt.
See you in SL!!!

Wow, what fun. I am going to have to pay your studio a visit. Quick note - something about your graphic is forcing the text on the left side of the blog post to go off the screen, making it hard to read. Maybe it's the size of the picture? Just FYI!
As always, I'm a fan of your work

Just stumbled across your blog, David. As always, very innovative. And it came through a resurrected connection. I got linked to GroupSystems and was reminded of the time we spent at the U. of Arizona, working with Jay Nunamaker and his crew. I plan to work my way through your postings as time permits. Nice to be in touch again.
